It’s very easy for water to get trapped underneath shingles on your roof that are torn, cracked, or simply missing. Additionally, you can get algae growth, and either one can escalate to mold. And it doesn’t matter what type of air climate that you reside in; warm weather and cold weather areas are both susceptible to getting mildew and algae growth equally.
You may notice discolored shingles (which can be dark black, grayish, blue-green, white – and that all depends on the type of mold/mildew/algae that is growing), or cracked shingles. The insulation more than likely will have black spotting on it, or you will notice that it’s damp (which means water is getting in your attic).
Unfortunately, it can get into your home if the infestation is bad enough, which is nothing that you want to deal with. Mold can grow in the attic insulation if the infestation is that bad on your roof, so it’s very important that you keep an eye on anything that you think looks suspicious or resembles mold growth.
